Green Nevis - Sierra Club Fundraiser

Elisabeth Lusche

Elisabeth Lusche

"The mountains are calling, and I must go and work on while I can, studying incessantly." - John Muir

For the Nevis Ensemble's 2021 Green Campaign and in honor of our orchestra's anthem (a certain tune by The Proclaimers), I'm walking 500 miles in 100 days to raise funds for the Sierra Club.

Any size gift can make a difference, and your donation will go towards:
• Providing clean energy to over 100 US cities through the Sierra Club's "Ready For 100" campaign.
• Protecting our land, water, and air – including providing education on proper wilderness and wildlife management to both governments and communities.
• Halting destructive drilling and mining that puts vulnerable environments, endangered animal populations, and drinking water at risk.
• Combating environmental injustice and advocating for vulnerable communities.

Will you help me reach my goal? Check back here for updates on my progress, stories and musings from my adventures, and maybe a few mini-performances...

If you'd like to learn more about the Sierra Club's mission, you can check out sierraclub.org. Want to know more about Nevis? Find us online at nevisensemble.org.

"uninhibited running" by Helene Gelens follow the path til the path ends run into the sun find yourself in a dune valley with warm sand the beachgrass the murmur of the sea run into the sea discover an increasingly immeasurable sea (see photo below)

1 of my favorite things about The Hague: The local gov installed poems on the sides of buildings throughout the city, so even in the middle of an urban center you're reminded of humanity and nature, like in this Dutch poem. Translation above!

A "hofje" is a small garden courtyard - and another place people living in the Netherlands can find a bit of green in the middle of dense cities! Found this one on a walk this week. Maybe my favorite discovery yet!

Shout out to my neighborhood park where I've been logging many of my miles! Lots of cool things including compost bins for healthy soil for the gardens of native plants AND beehives maintained by locals!

Thanks to everyone who has given so far! From now on I'll try to be more regular about posting here instead of just on my personal social media (although you can also follow me on Instagram @elisabethlusche to see how I'm getting on). See you tomorrow for my 300th mile!

Not every walk is glamorous - sometimes I walk to take out the recycling, which in the Netherlands you self-sort in city containers like this. Giving some of these miles extra purpose for the environment!

Channeling this energy for Day 1 of the #100DaysOfGreenNevis campaign! This was taken at the summit of Ben Nevis when the entire ensemble (yes, that's a cello in the background) made it to the top on our inaugural tour. Let's do this!

I enjoyed reading your story in the Sierra publication. I shared it with family and neighbors who are musicians and nature lovers. Thanks for your dedication to these causes. Keep on for the rest of the 162 miles.

As a lover of classical music, and a citizen concerned about the environment, this is a great opportunity to support both! While there are any number of environmental NGOs one can contribute to, I love the chance to promote the efforts of younger persons like Elizabeth. It is her generation that will bear the brunt of climate change.

Hi Elizabeth, What a great article! I especially loved the picture of you and your dad. I, too, love music and taking care of the environment. I appreciate your dedication to these causes as a young person and love keeping up with your activities. Stay true.
